**How Long Does It Take to Provision a New SMS Short Code?**
In the video above, we answer the question: How long does it take to provision a new SMS short code? Let’s start by explaining the meaning of a short code. An SMS short code consists of five to six digits. It is essentially a phone number that brands use to stay in contact with consumers. When a brand or other organization wants to obtain a dedicated short code, it needs to go through a purchase and approval process, because the phone number cannot be bought outright.
As a first step in the process, the brand needs to lease the SMS short code (short codes can only be leased and not bought). As a second step, the brand then needs to provision the leased short code. Depending on the season, the kind of SMS campaign that the brand wants to run, and the number of short codes that are, at that time, provisioned by the wireless carriers, the short code provisioning process can take as long as 8 to 12 weeks.
Provisioning means that your brand submits a short code application to every wireless carrier. Each carrier then approves that short code on its own time. This might mean that T-Mobile completes the process quicker than, for example, AT&T or Sprint. You will never know at forehand which carrier will provide the fastest approval.
Therefore, if you plan on running a nationwide text message marketing campaign for your brand, you really have to wait until all the wireless carrier have approved the short code. Again, the average wait time for your short code to go live on all the wireless carriers in the United States is 8 to 12 weeks.
